What is a 30 day challenge you ask? According to AgileLeanLife.com “a 30 Day Challenge is a proven strategy for implementing new healthy habits in life. It’s a great way to try new things, keep life variety high and undertake new challenges without putting too much pressure on yourself.”

The lists are endless! If you have a habit you want to create or add to your life than a 30 day challenge may be for you. However on average, it could take more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic. 66 days to be exact! Most people believe that habits are formed by completing a task for 21 days in a row. Twenty-one days of task completion, then voila, a habit is formed. Unfortunately, this could not be further from the truth. The 21-day myth began as a misinterpretation of Dr. Maxwell Maltz’s work on self-image.

We always think of the new year as a time to start something new. However many of us forget that we have 11 other months to create a habit or a change in our lives. We have 334 other days of the year to create a habit. Why do we settle for only using the first 31 days of the year?

You know what I’m talking about January 1 everybody’s in the gym it’s so packed you can barely find a machine but come February 1 none of those people are at the gym anymore! I am one of those people. I always say I can do this I’m going to do this and I fall off the bandwagon because I can’t create that habit.

We have to find people to hold us accountable for our actions and our goals. Just like with work, if we don’t show up our bosses call us, and if we missed too many days we lose our job. So why could we not apply the same attitude to creating a new habit in our life or breaking a bad one?
